The Mack: Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasgow School of Art is the most current history of the Mackintosh Building — the Glasgow studio block that made its architect's name — told from its conception through two devastating fires and the long work of reconstruction.
About This Book
Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928), the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art is among the most significant works of architecture of its era, its tall studios and atmospheric interiors shaping generations of architects, artists and designers. Robyne Calvert brings its story fully up to date for the first time, carrying the account beyond Mackintosh's lifetime to the fire of May 2014, the restoration that followed, and the 2018 fire that gutted most of the building.
Drawing on what the reconstruction revealed, Calvert revisits and corrects long-repeated assumptions about how the building was made, and addresses the public controversy over fire management that followed the second blaze. Archival material, reconstruction photography and visualisations from 3D scanning sit alongside new and previously unpublished images.
