Never Too Small is a quarterly magazine from the Melbourne studio of the same name, devoted to small-footprint living. Issue eight breaks the usual format and hands the whole thing over to a single city: Singapore.
About This Issue
The premise came out of a conversation with designer Timo Wong of Studio Juju, who described Singapore as a place unencumbered by the weight of an established design legacy—which leaves its architects, artists and designers free to begin from nothing in particular. The magazine found the idea compelling enough to build an entire issue around it.
What follows is not the polished city-state of the tourist brochure. It is sleek, certainly, but also gritty, playful and more than a little electric. Three apartments anchor the issue: one on wheels, one that manufactures a balcony where there wasn't one, and one that gives in gracefully to its own awkward angles. Around them sit the makers—E Ian Siew's inflatable lamps, Hans Tan's provocative porcelain, and Wolfsloth, who paints, illustrates, tattoos and plays guitar in roughly equal measure.
