Railing is the first book by Taiwanese product and furniture designer yangshueiyuan, tracing a humble piece of street hardware into a furniture collection.

About This Book

Across Taiwan, public railings in parks, sports centres, footpaths, private institutions and even airports are assembled with a versatile ball-and-socket joint. yangshueiyuan noticed how this overlooked metal component lets ironworkers improvise flexible, site-specific structures that combine function and appearance on the same line—and made it the starting point for The Railing Collection.

The book combines his street photographs, 3D modelling and a detailed record of the process from early mock-ups through to factory production. It includes a specially made manual for ironsmiths and a series of object renderings that capture his less directed design thinking. Printed on a range of paper stocks, it unfolds the making of each object layer by layer.

Key Features

  • Street photography, 3D renderings and process documentation in one volume
  • Includes a separate manual written for ironsmiths
