Selected from nearly 1,000 photographs taken over twelve years, the 90 images in Front Yard document a specific and disappearing slice of Australian suburban vernacular: the front garden as self-expression. Wadelton's focus sits squarely in the postwar decades — the 1950s through to the 1970s — a period whose particular aesthetic is under sustained pressure from urban densification and gentrification. The result is social history told through garden beds, ornaments, and overgrown paths. Elegiac without sentimentality, the book asks what is lost when these idiosyncratic, labour-intensive domestic landscapes are erased and replaced.
